3 Months

Standing is his FAVORITE activity!

This month has been consumed by my worries about sleep. There are SO many different sleep theories out there that no matter which one I try, I end up feeling guilty. If it's a parent-led approach like Babywise then I feel like I'm not listening to Quinn and his needs (even though he never goes hungry), if I let Quinn lead I get nervous that he's not sure what he needs and needs my help to be in a certain schedule. If he's awake, I'm worried he's not getting enough sleep. If he's asleep, I'm worried that he's sleeping too much and will get off "schedule" or not eat enough during the day and interrupt his night time sleep. If he sleeps too much at night, I'm worried it will affect my milk supply. And if he wakes too early- I'm annoyed. I seriously could drive myself crazy with all of these theories. Here's the thing I've come to understand-- NOT ONE IS RIGHT! There is no "right" way to parent when it comes to sleep except to help your child be as rested and as happy as possible- which I've come to learn means that you have to make choices sometimes about their sleep/eating pattern and you have to let them make "choices" sometimes when they are clearly telling you what they need. And sometimes I make mistakes and it becomes a trial and error process. And those times I need to learn to forgive myself and not beat myself up over it! I have been blessed with a baby that loves to sleep. He sleeps 8-10 hours uninterrupted at night (and then I wake him because I'm nervous about my milk supply) and takes 2-3 long naps during the day (on a GOOD day). But there are always those days where he seems to just want to nap for 40 minutes at a time but still seems tired which throws me for a loop-- when should he eat? Is he waking because he's hungry? Is it too bright in his room and so when he even half wakes up, there is no hope of getting back to sleep because of the light? Should I rock him longer before I put him down? Is he old enough to learn how to self soothe? It's never ending... My thoughts and prayers have been consumed.

On a brighter note-- my little boy is starting to emerge from a sleepy newborn! These days are filled with smiles, coos and bubbles. I'm greeted with a smile every time I come into get him from his crib. He has started drooling like crazy and that has come with him blowing bubbles all day. His favorite toy is his playmat gym. He is content under it for at least 20 minutes! He grabs the toys above him and tries to get them in his mouth, he bats at them, and he smiles at them. He's doing so much better with his tummy time! He still doesn't like it that much, but he will at least last about 3-5 minutes instead of about 30 seconds! He's obsessed with the tv-- which I know is bad-- but we use it as a reward to get him to hold his head up during tummy time and it works!! He has shown absolutely no interest in rolling over which is fine by me. I've seen so many changes this past month that I've learned how fast thing change! I can't even picture what 4 months will be like!

Love his smiles

He LOVES his daddy. After long days with me, he is always filled with smiles and giggles for his dad when he gets home. I can always count on Aaron to turn a grumpy baby into a happy baby in a matter of minutes when he gets home. I've also been blessed with a husband that puts Quinn down to sleep every single night. It's one of my favorite times of the day. I get time to just relax.

One of the next steps for Quinn is getting rid of his swaddle blanket. He hated it at first, but now loves being all snug in it! I've tried him out of it during a couple naps. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and he's left going crazy with his hands and arms in the crib and unable to get to sleep. Our pediatrician told us that we should start to try one arm out at 4 months and progress from there, so I'm not in too big of a hurry. It would just be nice to be able to just lay him in bed and let him soothe himself to sleep. I know those may be far fetched dreams right now, but I'm hoping it happens in the near future! :)

This month I started back to work. I'm going to work one day a week. Other than one incident, Quinn has done great taking a bottle from others. He has let us know that he prefers it WARM-- he literally will spit it out and not take it if it's not nice and toasty warm. I've only worked one night so far but he was great for his dad. He slept all night. My mom is watching him in the mornings after I work so that I can get in a couple hours of sleep. It seemed to work really well! I'm not going to say that I look forward to the next time that I work, but I know that Quinn is fine while I am at work. It's really nice not to worry about him.

We haven't had a doctors appointment since 2 months and we won't go until he is 4 months old. So we are really excited to see how much weight he has gained and how tall he is! Each month is more exciting than the last! I can't wait to see what he's up to this month! :)

Quinn's First Christmas

We had a wonderful first Christmas with Quinn. This year is the first year since graduating from college that I haven't worked either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day night. It was so relaxing to get to spend the whole holiday with family. We are so lucky that our families are very close and we actually eat Christmas Eve dinner together, go to Christmas Eve service together and then eat a meal on Christmas Day together. We are so blessed! It makes the holidays so much smoother! Here are some of my favorite pictures from our first Christmas! We forgot to grab a family picture on Christmas! Next Year!

Christmas morning... of course it wouldn't be complete without spit up all over before I could get a picture!

Happy on Christmas Day!!

Official Two Month Pictures

i forgot to include his "official" two month pictures in the last post...

...i cant believe how big he is!

Two Months

two month stats

weight: 13 lbs 9oz
height: 24.5 inches

he was 90th percentile in weight and 95th percentile in height. i knew he was big, but this totally confirmed how big he was!! he was fully in 0-3 month clothes at this point.

at the beginning of the second month, he attended his first wedding and snoozed the whole time...

had his first thanksgiving and snoozed more then...

he started wearing his first north face coat and we think he looks like the cookie monster in it...
he attended his second thanksgiving celebration in Illinois (his first travel out of the state) and was adored by all of our family while he was there...

he also got to meet some of his cousins... and he received a matching outfit from my cousin's wife, Melissa to match her son Westin... ADORABLE...

the day we got home from illinois, we went to meet Quinn's new friend Hank at the hospital. our friends Ben and Jess had a new baby boy!

we realized at this point how big Quinn was getting and how much he had changed!

by his second month he also had perfected this face...

which both of us just can't stand to see... but also think it's SO cute...

we had a great holiday gathering with some friends and it was just so crazy to how our lives have changed in the past year. there were three new babies there!

Can you believe how big he looks by the end of this second month compared to the beginning!?! It's unreal to me!

Also, by this point we had started to cloth diaper at least 70% of the time. I'll do a post on that soon because I'm completely obsessed.  He was giving us "social" smiles now too! It definitely took some time to bring them out at first. He would give us maybe one or two a day, but by the time we went to his two month appointment, he would smile pretty frequently! He also was awake and alert more. He still would go to sleep between an hour or two after each feeding and (hopefully) sleep around and hour or two. So this ends up giving him three naps a day. He also went on Zantac for his reflux over this month. He was spitting up large amount almost every feeding and was starting to be fussing and loosing sleep from it. We tried elevating his mattress, holding him upright for 30 minutes after every feeding (really fun at 3 in the morning) and we just tried not to move him a ton right after feedings, but it didn't seem to help too much. Starting him on on Zantac was something that I was very hesitant to do because I really didn't want to have medicine in his little body. But my doctor was very supportive of him starting it, so I decided to give it a try. It has seemed to help a good amount. He is much more comfortable and although we still do all of the precautions above, he seems to be happier after his feedings and spit up a little less. He still spits up a good amount though, and that's just something we will have to deal with! :) Lots and lots of burp cloths and LOTS of laundry.

By 6 weeks he started sleeping for 5-6 hour stretches. It was glorious!! He continued to be relaxed and chill baby. He didn't really have a preference for any one person and pretty much just went with the flow. Errands were still really easy because he seemed to sleep anywhere! I could be out all day and he wouldn't sleep any different than if we were at home.

We felt so blessed during the beginning of the holiday season. Thanksgiving had a whole new meaning to our whole family. A new life had such an impact on us all. The blessings were overflowing and we loved every minute of our second month with Quinn.

One Month

Quinn's Stats at One Month

Weight: 10lbs 6oz
Length: 22.5 inches

By one month we were starting to get into the groove of things, but I know I was still waking up at least twice a night to nurse. Quinn was starting to be more aware of things around him, but still was sleeping a TON. He was definitely so sleepy at this point. He's very snuggly baby. He loves to be held and swaddled.

I wish I remembered more details but I'm just going to share some pictures of the first month.
